We have approached the study from a social and technological perspective, with a particular interest in the consequences of on-demand technology for traditional broadcasting.
The field of research has been quite broad and addresses issues such as the historical impact of television, what we sacrifice in moving forward with new technologies and how the shift from broadcast to digital streaming is of great cultural significance. This includes a discussion about the licensing implications for broadcasters, the new challenges faced by advertisers and an overview of Australia's technological aspirations.
We have documented a brief history of the origin of today’s video-on-demand services, including anecdotes from industry professionals. Most importantly, though, the research acts as a gauge for the potential value of on-demand as a distribution paradigm in the coming decade. Personally, we are quite interested in the ramifications for television experience in the wake of new technologies, and hope to inform audiences of their role in shaping the future of Australian screens.
