SCOPE
As final year Media students @ RMIT University (Melbourne), we will be focusing on the media consumption within Metropolitan Capital Cities, Australia wide. In regards to the ‘on-demand technologies’, this report will be broken up into three key sections; past, present and future.
In order to set the context for our current landscape, considerations of former technologies of the past and how they have influenced our current technological landscape are explored, inclusive of the VCR, DVD Recorders, Video on-demand, Foxtel on-demand and Foxtel IQ. Furthermore, the reluctance from the networks to accommodate on-demand technology is explored, framed by a supporting case study involving a very public battle between Channel Nine News Network and an Electronic Program Provider called ICE TV. The present will discuss our current landscape, where we currently stand as consumers of media and the technologies available in relation to ABC iView and similar available services and also the rise of portable media devices. The ‘future’ section of this report will be examining more advanced ‘on-demand’ geographic locations such as Japan and South Korea. After examining a few case studies within these key technological areas, we will examine the future of ‘on-demand’ media consumption within Australian borders, in regards to the arrival of the National Broadband Network (NBN) in 2012 - 2015.
