THE PAST: VIDEO ON-DEMAND
Video on-demand (VOD) has been around for over a decade now and continues to be prevalent in hotel chains and residential addresses Australia wide. VOD Pty Ltd. is an Australian company who claims to be the only of their ilk in Australia providing IPTV and video on-demand services. The way that this works involves films being stored on a video server and delivered digitally to customers via different cable networks through a set top box. Viewers are able to control all regular functions much like a VCR or DVD Player with pause, play, stop, fast-forward and rewind using a remote control.
The choices in this process are limited and although the service continues in popularity, it does not attain the full capacity of the on-demand mediums we are familiar with today. The major factor for this is again the idea of space-shifting, as it is fixed to one television unit/set top box and does not give you the flexibility and portability of current mobile devices. Another disadvantage to this form of VOD is that it is pre-programmed by the company and therefore is very limited in its range of content on offer. This clearly encompasses elements that were influential on the development of Foxtel on-demand services. Next Page ➤ |
