MOVING FORWARD: TRANSITIONAL POINT IN OUR TIME
In 2012, we are in a rather transitional point in time, concerning how audiences consume television these days. Gone are the days where broadcast television dictated people's lifestyle. In the 80s and 90s, families would often consume their television together, as one family unit, in front of the ‘box’ - it was a serious communal affair. In 2012 and beyond, television has become highly personal and has heavily integrated into our busy lifestyles. We have had the ability to time-shift programs, on-demand, for quite some years now. However, as we move forward in time, we’ll soon have the ability to also ‘space-shift’ our television watching behaviours.
Both the ability to time-shift and also space-shift our television programs is facilitated through high speed broadband and strong Wide Area Networks (WANs). Using the internet as a vehicle to deliver high quality on-demand television, is starting to become a feasible alternative for broadcast television networks right across the globe. If we come back home, it simply revolves around the quality of our local communication systems - and with the arrival of the National Broadband Network (NBN), this could once again could influence our television consumption habits. Television consumers now have the ability to access content via mobile and wired devices, at home, at work and on the go - basically wherever else there is decent internet or cellular (3G) coverage.
